The Curious Case of…

Benjamin Button.

Go

See

It!

Beautiful movie, very touching, very real (in an emotional sense). Very good looking too. Brad Pitt + Cate Blanchett? Movie reels on fire! :P

***** 5/5 Stars

[EDIT] Happy New Year everyone! It’s been 12 hours already, but hey, for America it’s still 2008 and for England it’s only just gone midnight. I love being in the “future” [/EDIT]

[EDIT2] OMG just saw “YES MAN” with Jim Carrey. Man he’s hot! He’s getting on in years but rawr! Anyway, watching Murray from Flight of the Conchords (Norman in Yes Man) was … utterly painful. I HATE our accent. WHY OH WHY is our accent so BAD? It sounds particularly worse compared to American accents (ie in Star Wars with Tamuera Morrison—oh God, he’s great in NZ stuff, but he sounds terrible in Hollywood films). Anyway, to show how much of a Harry Potter geek I am, I really, really, laughed when Norman had his little Harry Potter party. zomg, EXPELLIAMUS! rofl! [/EDIT2]

Psychics..

Lookie what I won on trademe!:

I got a psychic reading today. A “professional” one. I do believe there are people who are psychic, or have some skill with tarot and predictions or whatev, but this guy—whether or not he has psychic abilities, was a typical sales-psychic. He said things like: “Thanks to my help, Samantha, you can…” and “with the help of my LUNAR MAGIC TECHNIQUE (link here) I can help you SOLVE this problem” etc etc. Totally advertising, totally ungenuine, totally not worth it. Next time (if there’s a next time) I’ll go to someone who doesn’t sound like a brochure, but more like a friend.

Talking about psychics though, I met a girl briefly online who was psychic—she was actually genuine, like, not fake at all and tried to help. I respect people like her. And she told me some stuff that ended up being true. I went to a palm/tarot reader in March this year and the lady seemed so fake (I was only there for entertainment really anyway), and I told this other girl about some things she said about my future husband. The girl said she wasn’t far off and told me her tarot readings on me read pretty much the same: Like the palm reader, she pulled out the Knight of Disks, and said that I was going to have a happy marriage, with few minor arguments. Pretty good future seeing as there aren’t really perfect marriages. I think it’s pretty boring tho. So much for that “take over the world” or “get famous” future ideal. But as long as we’re happy and I have a good family and don’t struggle financially.. I’m good!

Well, who knows if they are right or if it’s all just a scam. I think it’s true to a certain degree, (you just have to watch out for those who scam you for money) like, I believe all, or most religions are true—we all have the same core, like values, morals (asides from the few extremists) and a belief in a higher deity. We must’ve sprung from a beginning truth. And then I believe in Astrology—chinese or whatever. I’m not superstitious, but I think our lives are mapped out (or at least, we’re designed) because of the stars, or God, or whatever. I went to
Astrology.com and every free sample of readings I take (ie, what does your birthdate say about you) tend to be very correct. People may say I’m bizarre, but I’ve come to learn this. Sometimes the discoveries of the ancient past tend to be more correct than our narrow-minded present ones.

Maybe it just works for those who believe in it? I certainly come from a family of skeptics who will tell me not to be gullible. My religious friends might think I’m getting into witchcraft or something. Which I’m not—astrology and psychics aren’t magic. Then again…

Anyway. I wasted my entire day on the net yesterday on the net trying to understand astrology and psychics. Plus trademe. My parents wouldn’t be happy, I must say.

Christmas and such

I’ve joined Mugglespace. Yey!

You have to check this site out. It got a few wrong when I wasn’t really concentrating, but when I did, it got them right!!! It’s probably just down to luck, but that’s pretty lucky.

My Christmas was pretty gay. Midnight mass started the day off in disaster mode, what with us being late and the church was PACKED (only time of the year) so they sent us to another room showing the service on screen BUT the cable was faulty so it kept flickering on and off and on and off and the volume was too loud. I tell you, had it not been Christmas, one of us would’ve snapped. After mass we ended up sneaking away. Sorry God, but even you probably thought the whole thing was atrocious. The service wasn’t that good anyway.

We went to our usual morning service at 10, which was good to catch up with people we knew. The presents bit was gay. Not that I got bad presents (not that I got much) but more the fact that it was a bit of a let down. I should know this, every year in retail you’re pumped up by the ads and continuous songs on the radio that when the day rolls by, well, it’s just ..meh. And the religious part barely existed. I was so irreverant, I must say. These days the only thought going to Jesus is when you say grace for 2 seconds before the meal. And perhaps in church, if your mind is not a-wandering. I usually don’t, but even the Chaplain at the morning service who usually grabs my attention couldn’t stop me from gazing outside at the beautiful weather. I love summer Christmas. I wouldn’t swap it for a white one ever.

So I’ve been addicted to trademe lately. Shopping and bidding all too often… Man, the fight for the last bid… getting the things you want for cheap and occasionally bidding for something you don’t really need and then winning it even though it turns out to be shit. It’s great. You kiwi readers must bid on my stuff if you can. My username is sammyjane3 :)

Work is a drag, as usual. I work my butt off while the usuals get away with doing nothing. Plus everyone was in a bad mood after Christmas because we were understaffed and busy, so people were snapping at each other. Aye. It’s hard when you’re a hard worker and people only notice when you have a bad day eh?

Oh, and here’s the picture I drew and printed (A2) for my brother. It’s from his story. Pretty crap eh?

Twinnage is back!

Lo and behold! My brother is back from England after 354 days! The whole fam went up to Auckland to meet him, and we met up with a bunch of his mates who were planning a big greeting for them. It was quite funny actually, we must have been one of the more interesting arrival greetings of the day. When Stevo came through the arrivals door, my oldest brother did a mock run up to hug him, we followed (but not so embarrassingly), and then after our “moment” his friends (who were up the escalators about 100m away, yelled out “STEPHEN!” while running down the escalators.. in mock fashion. That got quite a few heads turning, as the airport was busy, and I remember this lady passing me and going “isn’t it nice seeing a bit of enthusiasm once in a while!”. Haha.

It’s getting really hot at the moment. I just saw a fly. It’s one of the first I’ve seen. Then again, I’ve been inside working these last few weeks. Infact, I don’t have a day off until Christmas, which is sad. At least around new years I get a few more days off. It’s better than last year though. Last year I was working continuously 12 hour days, and it’s only this credit crisis that has meant that our hours are getting chopped. But it’s a pain coming in for 6 hours or whatever a day and coming in at noon. It’s a pain. But at least I have a job!

I don’t know what else there is going on in my life. But my bros and I have organised a movie marathon sometime (and after these “vital” cricket matches) where we’ll be watching our all time famourite flicks: Galaxy Quest and Mars Attacks!. Us four know all the lines and all the actions—a sad fact seeing as those movies are mocking the alien movies and their geeky fans who know ALL the lines and whatnot. Hahaha. Oh, and we’ve added another movie to the lineup which isn’t alien related but just as hilarious and worthy-of-knowing-all-the-lines-for: Tropic Thunder. It wasn’t the best movie, but it was very clever. I loved those ads at the start… lol

Latest News

What is been going on in the life of Queen Sammy?

  • Work, as usual
  • Dyed my hair brown
  • Got work off to pick up Stephen from the airport next sunday!
  • Won These shoes on Trademe
  • Watched The Other Boleyn Girl. Cried.
  • Read The Tales of Beedle the Bard
  • Found a flat for next year. Furnished and everything.

That’s about it, unfortunately. But it has been fairly significant. I haven’t got nearly enough done that I’ve wanted to, but oh well. I’m meant to make a website for my dad and do a drawing for my brother both by Christmas, but that’s as likely to happen as me getting a real tan this summer.

Rats are surviving but aren’t very happy with me at the moment. I haven’t had the time to give them the attention they need :(

If anyone from school reads this—how are you? Please keep in touch!

My Marks and being a guinea pig…

Hey hey hey! I got my final marks for university! I got an overall, yearly average of A- which is great. I’m happy with that.

Here’s my marks:
S1 82.111 Basic Design I A-
S1 82.112 Computer Practical I B+
S1 82.113 Colour Theory I A-
S1 82.114 Drawing I A-
S1 82.115 Intro to Theory/Methods A-
S1 82.130 Applied English I A-
S1 82.132 Design History I A
S2 82.121 Basic Design II A-
S2 82.122 Computer Practical II B+
S2 82.126 Typography I A
S2 82.127 Production I B+
S2 82.128 Photography I A-
S2 82.131 Applied English II A-
S2 82.133 Design History II A

As you can see I got an “A-” in photography, my best class. I’m sure some people will be thrilled to note. Although I got A’s in all my photography assessments, because I failed to put in enough time for the last group, (and I admitted it—I don’t know what the others said in their self appraisals) my entire grade was marked down. So I’m really gutted on that particular class, I really am. But the others are fine, I can’t complain.

Anyway, I was a guinea pig in Kelly’s beauty exam yesterday. I am NEVER getting waxed again. Especially under the arms! I have hyper sensitive skin, so with the facial treatment I came out in a rash and then when I was waxed, I had red, spotty skin for hours afterwards. And it still hurt until last night. At least I’m de-haired again and can wear shorts and sleeveless tops haha. The other treatments I got for the exam were—a makeover, manicure (albeit more like just a file and paint job), a foot scrub and massage, a back massage (still doesn’t make the legs feel better), stomach crunches and thigh.. er.. (these were two machines used on me). And although it sounded nice, I had to stand in my underwear to get “analysed” at one point only to be told I stand funny, I have a curved back, hyper-extended knees, a shoulder that is higher than the other, am “underweight” on my BMI. At least they said my thigh and stomach muscle’s were good, and my butt muscles satisfactory in strength. Like I use my butt to fight people or run or something…. Haha. Anyway, it was really exbarrassing more of the time, and really awkward having examiners and examinees poke and prode at me then inspect my skin (hmmm…) but ah well.

Yes, I have the unfortunate gene that has been running through my family for generations. My great-grandma had it, my grandma had it, my dad has it and now I (of all my siblings) am the only one that has it. Bad skin. Not, just acne, but like, easily scarred, redness and fast-aging skin. Compare the skin on my arm to a thirty year olds’ and mine looks older. So those people who complain when you get a pimple: Shut up ok? Some people have it worse off. It’s a bit depressing because I look at my dad, granny and g-grandma and noticed how old they looked at such a young age. I hope I’m not destined to be the same. Olay products, here I come. :)

OH! And what kind of HP fan am I? I STILL haven’t purchaced “Tales of Beedle the Bard”. I will be getting mine today :)

Names

I’ve been working endlessly at my job lately. I’d get up early and catch a bus an hour before I start in order to make it on time, work all day, get back early evening, then do bugger-all until bed then repeat the next day. On Thursday it was our biggest day of the year (cardholders day)—which was a dress up (unfortunately I didn’t win with my “army Xmas elf” costume—but I’ll put photos up once I get them) so I worked 12 hours straight that day (noon till midnight) and then had to work early the next day. And tomorrow marks my 6th day in a row. Can’t wait for my two days off before I repeat the process. And the thing is, I don’t actually get much done on my days off. I have so much to do before Christmas, but so little time. Thanks work. I expect a big paycheck next payday. But anyway, I’m liking it much more this year because I’m with better people—I’m still in menswear, it’s just that there’s newbies I get along with and are my age. Last summer I wasn’t as happy to go to work. I mean, it’s still tiresome, but it’s easier to get up in the mornings now.

But I’ll hold my breath until Xmas is over. There’ll be more 12 hour shifts and late night closing in the next few weeks (woe is me).

I’m thinking of doing teaching after I graduate. I’m trying to apply for a teaching scholarship but it’s a first come first serve basis (only 5 places!!!) and so I can’t apply until I get my year’s results. So WSD/UCOL—if you don’t send me my results soon and or if I don’t get the schol—I’m blaming you for your incredible slowness. The scholarship is more important to me than anything else right now!!

I’ve been thinking about names I really like. I mean, for my kids. I only want two boys but I can only really think of girls names I like!

Girls Names I like

  • Aubrey—(”brey” NOT “drey”)
  • Aimee
  • Nadine
  • Madison
  • Sienna
  • Chloe

Oooh I love Aubrey. I never knew it existed (apart from Audrey) until I heard about Aubrey Beardsley. Then I found out it was a unisex name and decided it was nice as a girls name. Did you know it’s insanely popular in America as a girls name, but as a boys name it’s like, non-existant?
I realised most of my names are really old fashioned or uncommon. Sides from Chloe but that seems kind of old-fashioned. And none are intentionally named after famous people, it’s just that I liked them.

Boys Names I like

  • Alexander (Lex)
  • Peter
  • Daniel
  • James
  • Aidan

Very traditional names this time. The last two were just ones that …kind of… appealed to me. I just don’t like many boys names. I like Michael and Stephen, but those are my brother’s names so I can’t use them.. lol. It’s like using my name. I like it, but I’m not calling my kid Samantha or Jane. But Alexander and Peter I’ve always loved. If I had a boy I’d call him Alexander Peter (I want two boys so I have no clue what the other would be called!) then I heard of the designer called Peter Alexander. It sounds better, but I like Alexander better so would want to make his first name Alexander. I mean, by brother’s name is Paul Nicholas but he’s called Nicholas. Some people don’t realise it, but it’s common to be called by your “legally middle name”. It’s preferance for the parents. It’s a pain for him though. He gets a lot of mail to a Mr Paul Oehley and often has to explain to businesses and whoever that he’s called Nicholas, not Paul. Haha.

Anyway, enough with the name talk. I’m not going to be a parent for many years! I’ve decided I’m not going to date or marry. Men have been too disappointing for me and plus I have high expectations, I won’t just date anyone for the sake of it or because he’s “cute” and likes me. I want Mr Perfect or no one at all. I like the idea of being a single, successful career woman and possibly adopting or having kids by myself. Adopting will at least guarantee a choice in sex and race lol…

I’m a bit anti-men today. Part from family men, they never let me down.

What do you see inside a sphere made of mirror…

When does it stop reflecting?

It’s one of life’s greatest mysteries. For me anyway. One day I want to sit inside a mirror ball (with a light source of course) and see what it’s like.

Apparently, you’ll see nothing really. This site tried to show me but it didn’t really make sense. It probably just reflects and reflects and reflects so you only get light.. or nothing. Argh. Confusing/

Does anyone else know anything?

Summer Lovin’ Having a blaast.

Well, hasn’t it been blazing hot recently? Today it was 30ยบ in Hamilton. I’m still melting. Anyway, here’s a list of things I’ve been getting up to lately:

  • Started my summer job in the menwear department of Farmers
  • Joined the Young Nats group—a group for young National supporters.
  • Read Goodbye Mr Chips.
  • Watched Goodbye Mr Chips (1939 version—1969 isn’t on dvd :P)
  • Watched the Sound of Music
  • Decided I hated Twilight

So, starting with work: It’s really good, I’m getting back into the swing of things. I like work, it’s just the days are way too long. And I’ll probably be over it in a few weeks. But hey, I have a good bunch of co-workers and that makes one hell of a difference.

I was actually invited to join the CNI Young Nats, and I’m keen to get started. But I’d probably be more motivated if it was before the election. At the moment I’ve run out of Political ..stamina. Lol, no, political enthusiasm. There’s a get together this friday for the members (which I probably won’t be able to make) which I’d like to go to, only problem is that I probably won’t know as much as everyone else about politics. They’ll probably ask me a question and I’ll be like? Erm… Pass?

I’ve really got into the Sound of Music recently. I love that film, it’s the best. Know all the words to all the songs and wish that my future husband will look and be just like Captain von Trapp (aka Christopher Plummer). I’ve actually noticed how one of the children—Brigetta (bottom row far right) looks astonishingly like a younger Kristen Kreuk. So pretty!

Years ago I watched the 1969 film, Goodbye Mr. Chips, with Peter O’Toole in it (I’m still mad that after all these years he’s never won an Oscar. He’s the one who keeps getting the nominations and deserving it, but then it’s given to some other fool). Anyway, I liked the film (though I can’t remember it now) and I found the book the other day so read it. It was short—only took me two hours—and it was great, really old school. Loved it. Pity it wasn’t bulked up a bit more. It was very faced paced. So anyway I wanted to see the film, and called up the video store to see if they had it. And they did! Only turns out they had the original film, and it wasn’t till I got back home and told dad did I realise this wasn’t the one I wanted to see, that it was the remake in 1969 that I wanted. Anyways. It was alright—not too bad for a 1939 film. I just got bored by the end. There wasn’t much of a climax…

Last bit of news. A lot of people seem to be buying into the hype of Twilight. It’s a sappy, teenage mills and boon with no substantial plot, barely any main characters, an ending that was unrealistic and stupid… Ok, I haven’t fully read it, I only flicked through it, but how MUCH can the author describe how gorgeous Edward is? It’s obvious that Bella fancies the fool, and he’s just an emo kid really, If the author wasn’t so “CHRISTCHUN” they would’ve had sex by book 2. Yeah, that’s right. It’s not so innocent. And the ending is awful, like, GOD awful. How can one absolutely plain girl who gets B’s in math end up being The Most Powerful Vampire On The Face Of The Planet, Who Has The Right To Order Around The Other Vampires (Who Listen To Her).

Utter garbage.
Yeah, so I’m a Harry Potter fan all the way. At least that series had substance.

Colonel Sandy and Lieutenant Shiny Eyes

Want to know how my pet rats are going? I’ve had them for almost 2 months now. Today I did (yet another) clean out, but I decided to change around the cage so it’s a little more interesting. And every week I give them a new box to sleep in because they destroy the previous one. They went bezerk when I put them back in today—I had dried the flannels in the sun so they were really warm—they loved it!

Here are some photos I took today (click to expand):

The cage (and the orange critter ball haha)

(l): Colonel Sandy/Plague/JD (r): Lieutenant Shiny Eyes/Black/Turk

They love the sunflower seeds so I got a ton of it for them.

Turk likes his new bed

Pretty exciting stuff

Oh snap!

My family actually like them. My dad hated them at first but today he let them run around on his desk while he was working. I was like “Dad, you know they’ll chew and pee on stuff…” … But they didn’t, thank goodness.

Funny thing happened about 2 days ago though. My mum was holding old whitey (aka Colonel Sandy, Plague, JD) on the lazy boy chair, and she let it run amok and it climbed down the side of the chair! It was only about an hour or so later when I finally managed to reach in and grab it. Everyone hated the thing for that short period. Even the peanut butter bait didn’t work (It got close but scattered to the depths of the chair whenever we reached in for him). New house rule: No holding the rats while on a lazy boy chair. Haha.

Ok, and if anyone’s from New Zealand, I’m selling some random crap on Trademe (username: sammyjane3). You probably want them even less than I do, but check it out anyway.

Hope everyone’s having a good holiday.
